Avoiding Stress During College Finals

As any college student knows, finals week can be one of the most painful experiences of the college career. Most would rather pull a double shift at work, catch a cold, or even get a parking ticket than deal with the spawn of all evil, otherwise known as "the final exam." Recent statistics show course requirements becoming more stringent in all levels of education nationwide and students experiencing more headaches and other physical ailments related to stress. However, there are some practical things you can do to avoid succumbing to the all-too-common stress symptoms.

Manage your schedule well. This is the first and arguably most crucial element of stress-avoidance. Be certain to give yourself plenty of time to dedicate to studying your course material. In fact, it is usually wise to plan out your finals week in advance, using a calendar to schedule when you will study. Stick to your schedule. However, balance your study time with the regular social activities you enjoy: continue to hang out with friends, your boyfriend or girlfriend, even see a movie or enjoy dinner at a nice restaurant the weekend before the exam. There is a danger in overloading your mind with information and can actually cause you to do worse on the test. But remember to prioritize. Study comes first, fun second.

Finally, ask your professor for help. If you do not understand your notes or certain material from your textbook's chapters, send your professor or instructor an e-mail in advance. Do not wait until the last minute to realize you do not have the proper information to study from. This will cause additional stress. Most professors will be more than willing to help.
